Fiber IV

Tamara raised an important question: How do you get children to eat more fiber?

I have no answer to that question.

Kids, by nature, do not like fiber--they love processed foods. They like to eat things like Raman Noodles, Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, and Spaghetti O's. In short, if it is disgusting and has almost zero nutritional value, children love it.

On the bright side, and I can only speak from my own experience, my kids really like almost all fruits, most vegetables, PB&J, and most breakfast foods--like eggs and whole wheat pancakes and waffles.

Dinner is a big problem. My children would be happy with Hamburger Helper every night.

since i have so much experience, i thought i would kindly share my knowledge about getting kids to eat fiber :) actually, i heard two friends talking about a book called . . . i can't remember, but the main idea is pureeing vegetables, etc. and mixing it into dinners so the children eat the hamburger helper not knowing there is zucchini mixed in. I found the book: Jessica Seinfeld's Deceptively Delicious. Both friends who have the recipe book say the flavor does not suffer.

If they really need a boost of fiber, you can mix Benefiber into just about anything. It's tasteless and has absolutely no texture. You can bake it right into a meal or cookies or whatever. They will never know!

Spencer and Camille both love raisins and prunes. Every time I take them out I say, "These are so yummy. They taste like candy." I also buy that costco bread with 5 or 6 grams per slice.

P.S. I've also started giving my kids the healthy part of their meal while they wait for their lunch (mac n cheese). I give them an apple or banana or put some peas in the microwave.
